Book summary
A German novel set one summer, around 1880, in the mountains of Bavaria, near Fall, a small village on the Isar, a mountain river. Friedl, a young huntsman in the king's service, protects the game and is searching for a poacher who kills chamois and roe deer and who can be recognised by the nine nails in the soles of his shoes. He loves Modei, who tends cows in a mountain hut and is the mother of a little boy. But the child's father, Blasi, also has nine nails under his shoes. A novel of love and hunting, full of the simple life of Bavarian villages and mountain pastures.
