About this book

A blunt, hot-tempered younger son from Tokyo takes a post teaching mathematics in a small town on Shikoku. The pupils test him on his first night, and the staff room proves craftier still, with its intrigues and its nicknames. Incapable of calculation or compromise, he takes sides, makes enemies and prepares his own kind of revenge. The novel explores clumsy honesty, the hypocrisy of institutions and homesickness. Sōseki makes of it a fast comedy, carried by a spoken voice that passes judgement out loud.

The benefits of the bilingual method with Line-by-line synced layout

Every line of the original has its translation directly beneath it, at the same height. You never lose your place: your eye drops one line and lands on exactly the sentence it just read. This is the layout that lets you open a book in a language you barely know without ever giving up, and compare the two texts almost word for word.

The excerpt shows the method using another book from the catalogue, not this one.
