Book summary

An Italian novel subtitled “The Story of a Poor Family”. In Milan, in May 1831, Vittore, a former soldier of Napoleon, dies in poverty. His eldest son, Damiano, becomes the support of his mother, his sister Stella and his younger brother. Damiano dreams of becoming a painter; he has learned drawing in secret from an old, poor artist, but first he must earn enough to keep his family alive. Around him live the humble people of Milan’s outer districts. A tender novel about poverty, duty and the dignity of ordinary people.

The plot

A young man who paints in secret. At dawn, Damiano, aged twenty, climbs up to a poor old painter’s room. There he paints a picture for a competition.

The world of the book

Milan, in northern Italy, in 1831. The novel opens in the spring of 1831. The city is then ringed by walls and crossed by canals. Twenty years earlier, it was the capital of a Kingdom of Italy created by Napoleon.

The author

Giulio Carcano. 1834. This young poet from Milan publishes his first poem. Austria, which then rules the city, has two passages cut.

The benefits of the bilingual method with Line-by-line synced layout

Every line of the original has its translation directly beneath it, at the same height. You never lose your place: your eye drops one line and lands on exactly the sentence it just read. This is the layout that lets you open a book in a language you barely know without ever giving up, and compare the two texts almost word for word.

The excerpt shows the method using another book from the catalogue, not this one.
