Book summary

The legends of King Arthur, retold in modern English by Rupert S. Holland (1919) from the work of Thomas Malory. The secret son of King Uther, Arthur is raised by the knight Ector without knowing anything of his birth. At fifteen he draws from a stone the sword that no lord has been able to move, and becomes king. Around the Round Table at Camelot, Lancelot, Gareth, Tristram and Galahad ride out on adventures and in quest of the Grail, before rivalries and betrayals threaten the kingdom. A clear and lively way into the great tales of chivalry.

The plot

The boy who pulls the sword from the stone. One Christmas in London, a sword appears, stuck fast in a stone. Whoever pulls it out will be king.

The world of the book

The Knights of the Round Table. King Arthur holds court at Camelot, around a great round table. His knights ride off on adventures in the forests, fight in tournaments and seek the Grail, a sacred cup.

The author

An English knight tells of King Arthur. Thomas Malory loves the French romances about King Arthur. He translates them into English and turns them into one great book, around 1470.

The benefits of the bilingual method with Line-by-line synced layout

Every line of the original has its translation directly beneath it, at the same height. You never lose your place: your eye drops one line and lands on exactly the sentence it just read. This is the layout that lets you open a book in a language you barely know without ever giving up, and compare the two texts almost word for word.

The excerpt shows the method using another book from the catalogue, not this one.
