Book summary

Letters written between 1793 and 1795 by the English writer Mary Wollstonecraft to Gilbert Imlay, an American doing business in France. It all begins in Paris during the Revolution: to escape the prison that threatens the English, she takes the name “Mrs Imlay” and lives with him. But Imlay is often away, and she writes to him almost every day, tender, lively, sometimes teasing. Then come Le Havre, the birth of their daughter Fanny, London, and a journey to Sweden and Norway on Imlay’s business. An intimate correspondence in which a woman says frankly what she expects from love.

The plot

A woman writes to the man she loves. In Paris, Mary, an English writer, falls in love with Gilbert Imlay, an American who has come to do business.

The world of the book

Paris in the Revolution. The letters begin in Paris in 1793. The French have just overthrown their king, and France is at war with England. Mary, who writes these letters, is English: she could be sent to prison.

The author

Mary Wollstonecraft. As a young woman, she opened a school with her sisters and her best friend, then taught the daughters of a noble family in Ireland. In 1792, one of her books made her famous as far away as France…

The benefits of the bilingual method with Line-by-line synced layout

Every line of the original has its translation directly beneath it, at the same height. You never lose your place: your eye drops one line and lands on exactly the sentence it just read. This is the layout that lets you open a book in a language you barely know without ever giving up, and compare the two texts almost word for word.

The excerpt shows the method using another book from the catalogue, not this one.
