Book summary

An English novel, the second part of “a Romance of Sussex”. In 1908, in a seaside town in the south of England, Ruth, a former housemaid, marries Ernie Caspar, a working man who raises little Alice, born before their marriage, as his own daughter. The years pass: more children are born, Ernie loses his job, and the rent is owed to Alf, Ernie’s brother, who still desires Ruth. Joe Burt, a trade unionist from the North, falls in love with her. Strikes spread and the fear of war grows until the summer of 1914. A sensitive portrait of a strong and faithful working-class woman.

The plot

A young bride stands up for her family. In 1908, Ruth marries Ernie. He raises Alice, Ruth’s little girl, as his own daughter.

The world of the book

A town between the sea and the hills. The town in the book, Beachbourne, has an invented name. But its streets and white cliffs are those of Eastbourne, in Sussex, in the south of England.

The author

An officer turned writer. The son of a colonel, he became an officer in 1893. In 1895, he left the army and began to write.

The benefits of the bilingual method with Line-by-line synced layout

Every line of the original has its translation directly beneath it, at the same height. You never lose your place: your eye drops one line and lands on exactly the sentence it just read. This is the layout that lets you open a book in a language you barely know without ever giving up, and compare the two texts almost word for word.

The excerpt shows the method using another book from the catalogue, not this one.
