Book summary

An American adventure novel. Peter Moore, a wireless operator on the Pacific liners, has the sharpest ears in his trade. In the Chinese quarter of San Francisco, a woman throws him a note from a window, ordering him to keep away and naming a distant city: Len Yang. A call for help in Morse code, a kidnapped young American woman, an escape by sampan on a river near Shanghai draw him towards the domain of the “Gray Dragon”, a master of cinnabar mines. A fast-paced mystery story, set in China at the start of the twentieth century.

The plot

A call for help picked up by radio at sea. Peter Moore is a radio operator on Pacific liners. His hearing is so sharp that he picks up messages no one else can hear.

The world of the book

China in the early days of radio. The book came out in 1919. At the time, great liners linked San Francisco to China.

The author

George Worts, radio operator turned writer. Born in the United States in 1892, George Worts was a radio operator on ships in the Pacific, just like his hero, Peter Moore.

The benefits of the bilingual method with Line-by-line synced layout

Every line of the original has its translation directly beneath it, at the same height. You never lose your place: your eye drops one line and lands on exactly the sentence it just read. This is the layout that lets you open a book in a language you barely know without ever giving up, and compare the two texts almost word for word.

The excerpt shows the method using another book from the catalogue, not this one.
