Book summary

A book of travel and history published in Boston in 1910 under the pen name Francis Miltoun. The author visits the residences of the kings of France, in Paris and around the capital: the Louvre, the Tuileries, the Palais-Royal, Vincennes, Fontainebleau, Versailles, Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Rambouillet, Chantilly, Compiègne. He also tells the story of the formal French garden and of the great royal hunts. Rather than dates, he gathers the anecdotes left by the old chroniclers. A lively walk through centuries of French history.

The plot

Three tales from the royal palaces. Legend says Fontainebleau takes its name from a spring, the “Belle Eau” (beautiful water). It can still be seen in the palace garden.

The world of the book

Seven centuries of royal palaces. Around 1370, at the Louvre in Paris, King Charles V gathers a library of 910 books.

The author

An American on the roads of France. Born near Boston, he becomes a publisher in New York. He writes his books under a pen name: Francis Miltoun.

The benefits of the bilingual method with Line-by-line synced layout

Every line of the original has its translation directly beneath it, at the same height. You never lose your place: your eye drops one line and lands on exactly the sentence it just read. This is the layout that lets you open a book in a language you barely know without ever giving up, and compare the two texts almost word for word.

The excerpt shows the method using another book from the catalogue, not this one.
