Book summary

An English novel. London, May 1914. Gwenna Williams, a young and dreamy Welsh typist, goes to a flying display at Hendon and picks out, among the postcards, the portrait of an airman, Paul Dampier. She meets him soon afterwards at a dinner party, and he promises to take her up flying. Between her dreams, the ironic advice of her friend Leslie and office life, she goes to work at an aircraft factory. But the summer passes, and war is drawing near. A lively, romantic love story that captures the excitement of the early days of flight.

The plot

A plane takes off before her eyes. One Saturday in May, in London, Gwenna Williams, a young Welsh girl, sees aeroplanes for the first time.

The world of the book

London, 1914: a passion for planes. The first aeroplane flew in 1903. In 1914, flying is still an adventure, and every flight is a show.

The author

Berta Ruck, from India to Wales. She was born in 1878 in India, where her father was an army officer. At two, she went to live with her grandmother in Wales.

The benefits of the bilingual method with Line-by-line synced layout

Every line of the original has its translation directly beneath it, at the same height. You never lose your place: your eye drops one line and lands on exactly the sentence it just read. This is the layout that lets you open a book in a language you barely know without ever giving up, and compare the two texts almost word for word.

The excerpt shows the method using another book from the catalogue, not this one.
