Book summary

An English novel, subtitled “A Comedy”. In London in 1902, Jane Holland, a young novelist, suddenly becomes famous. Her friend George Tanqueray, a writer of genius still unknown to the public, warns her that celebrity is the beginning of the end. Jane loves him in secret, but Tanqueray, who shuns society, marries Rose, the young servant who nursed him. Other writers move around them, such as the novelist Nina Lempriere and the poet Owen Prothero. Hugh Brodrick, the owner of a major newspaper, falls in love with Jane. Can one love, marry and still go on writing? A subtle, clear-sighted novel showing that the answer is not the same for a woman as for a man.

The benefits of the bilingual method with Line-by-line synced layout

Every line of the original has its translation directly beneath it, at the same height. You never lose your place: your eye drops one line and lands on exactly the sentence it just read. This is the layout that lets you open a book in a language you barely know without ever giving up, and compare the two texts almost word for word.

The excerpt shows the method using another book from the catalogue, not this one.
