About this book

On Christmas Eve little Marie is given a wooden nutcracker that her godfather Drosselmeier has mended. Left alone in the parlour, she watches the toys come alive and give battle to an army of mice led by a seven-headed king. Hurt in the fighting, she then hears the story of Princess Pirlipat, which explains where the nutcracker came from. The tale explores childhood, the border between dream and waking, and the credit adults give a child's account. Hoffmann nests his stories in a fantasy where the marvellous always keeps a possible explanation.

The benefits of the bilingual method with Line-by-line synced layout

Every line of the original has its translation directly beneath it, at the same height. You never lose your place: your eye drops one line and lands on exactly the sentence it just read. This is the layout that lets you open a book in a language you barely know without ever giving up, and compare the two texts almost word for word.

The excerpt shows the method using another book from the catalogue, not this one.
