Book summary

A collection of five English short stories published between 1861 and 1903, by W. S. Gilbert, Anthony Trollope, Hubert Crackanthorpe, George Egerton and Israel Zangwill, all devoted to courtship. In Venice, an Englishman sees his young neighbour only through her reflection in the canal. In a Devon village, Patience, the parson’s outspoken daughter, sees a wealthy captain arrive from London. The other stories follow a sheep farmer, a rich and very shy fisherman, and a young poet, each drawn to a woman. Five views of love and marriage in the age of Queen Victoria.

The plot

Five love stories, five first meetings. In Venice, an Englishman sees his young neighbour only as a reflection in the canal. Every morning, he throws her a flower.

The world of the book

Love in the time of Queen Victoria. Queen Victoria reigned over the United Kingdom from 1837 to 1901. In well-off families, a young woman never went out alone with a man: her mother or an older lady came along. Money…

The author

The five writers in this collection. William Gilbert wrote comic operas with the composer Arthur Sullivan, and they are still performed today.

The benefits of the bilingual method with Line-by-line synced layout

Every line of the original has its translation directly beneath it, at the same height. You never lose your place: your eye drops one line and lands on exactly the sentence it just read. This is the layout that lets you open a book in a language you barely know without ever giving up, and compare the two texts almost word for word.

The excerpt shows the method using another book from the catalogue, not this one.
