Il taccuino di Sherlock Holmes

PRIGODA SLAVNEGA KLIENTA

The adventure of the illustrious client

„Zdaj ne more več škoditi,“

“It can’t hurt now,”

je pripomnil gospod

was Mr.

Sherlock Holmes, ko sem ga

Sherlock Holmes’s comment when,

že desetič v desetih letih

for the tenth time in as many years,

prosil za dovoljenje, da objavim pričujočo zgodbo.

I asked his leave to reveal the following narrative.

Tako sem končno smel zapisati, kar je bil,

So it was that at last I obtained permission to put on record what was,

v nekem smislu,

in some ways,

največji trenutek v karieri mojega prijatelja.

the supreme moment of my friend’s career.

Holmes in jaz sva imela slabost za turško kopel.

Both Holmes and I had a weakness for the Turkish Bath.

Ob cigareti, v prijetni utrujenosti sušilnice, sem ga doživljal manj zadržanega in bolj človeškega kot kjer koli drugje.

It was over a smoke in the pleasant lassitude of the drying-room that I have found him less reticent and more human than anywhere else.

V zgornjem nadstropju kopališča na Northumberland Avenue je odmaknjen kotiček, kjer stojita drug ob drugem dva ležalnika,

On the upper floor of the Northumberland Avenue establishment there is an isolated corner where two couches lie side by side,

in na njiju sva ležala 3. septembra

and it was on these that we lay upon September 3,

1902,

1902,

na dan, ko se začenja moja pripoved.

the day when my narrative begins.

Vprašal sem ga, ali se kaj dogaja,

I had asked him whether anything was stirring,

in v odgovor je izpod rjuh, ki so ga ovijale, iztegnil svojo dolgo,

and for answer he had shot his long,

tanko,

thin,

živčno roko in iz notranjega žepa suknjiča, ki je visel poleg njega, potegnil kuverto.

nervous arm out of the sheets which enveloped him and had drawn an envelope from the inside pocket of the coat which hung beside him.

„Morda je kak siten,

“It may be some fussy,

domišljav bedak,

self-important fool,

morda gre za življenje ali smrt,“

it may be a matter of life or death,”

je rekel

said he,

in mi podal pisemce.

as he handed me the note.

„Ne vem nič več od tega, kar piše v njem.“

“I know no more than this message tells me.”
