ریچل لیند شگفت‌زده می‌شود

Rachel Lynde Is Surprised

خانم

MRS.

ریچل لیند درست همان‌جا زندگی می‌کرد که جادهٔ اصلی آوونلی در گودالی کوچک فرو می‌رفت،

Rachel Lynde lived just where the Avonlea main road dipped down into a little hollow,

گودالی که حاشیه‌اش را بیدِ مشک و گوشوارهٔ‌ زنانه گرفته بود

fringed with alders and ladies’

و جویباری از میانش می‌گذشت که سرچشمه‌اش دور، در جنگل‌های ملک قدیمی کاتبرت بود؛

eardrops and traversed by a brook that had its source away back in the woods of the old Cuthbert place;

می‌گفتند این جویبار در آغازِ مسیرش میان آن جنگل‌ها پرپیچ‌وخم و شتابان است،

it was reputed to be an intricate, headlong brook in its earlier course through those woods,

با رازهای تاریکِ آبگیر و آبشار؛

with dark secrets of pool and cascade;

اما تا به گودالِ لیند می‌رسید، جویباری آرام

but by the time it reached Lynde’s Hollow it was a quiet,

و سربه‌راه شده بود،

well-conducted little stream,

چون حتی یک جویبار هم نمی‌توانست از برابر درِ خانهٔ خانم

for not even a brook could run past Mrs.

ریچل لیند بگذرد و حرمتِ ادب و آبرومندی را نگه ندارد؛

Rachel Lynde’s door without due regard for decency and decorum;

it probably was conscious that Mrs.

Rachel was sitting at her window,

و چشمِ تیزش را به هر چه می‌گذرد دوخته،

keeping a sharp eye on everything that passed,

از جویبارها و بچه‌ها به بالا،

from brooks and children up,

و اگر چیزی عجیب یا ناجور می‌دید، تا چرایی و چگونگی‌اش را از زیر زبانِ روزگار بیرون نمی‌کشید، آرام نمی‌گرفت.

and that if she noticed anything odd or out of place she would never rest until she had ferreted out the whys and wherefores thereof.

آدم‌های بسیاری هستند،

There are plenty of people,

in Avonlea and out of it,

که با وانهادنِ کارِ خود می‌توانند به کارِ همسایه‌ها

who can attend closely to their neighbors’

but Mrs.

ریچل لیند از آن موجوداتِ کارآمد بود که هم از عهدهٔ کارِ خود برمی‌آیند و هم کارِ مردم را سرِ چانه می‌گذارند.

Rachel Lynde was one of those capable creatures who can manage their own concerns and those of other folks into the bargain.

کدبانویی نامدار بود؛

She was a notable housewife;

کارَش همیشه انجام شده بود و خوب انجام شده بود؛

her work was always done and well done;

او انجمنِ خیاطی را

“ran” the Sewing Circle,

and was the strongest prop of the Church Aid Society and Foreign Missions Auxiliary.

Yet with all this Mrs.

ریچل وقتِ فراوان داشت که ساعت‌ها کنار پنجرهٔ آشپزخانه‌اش بنشیند

Rachel found abundant time to sit for hours at her kitchen window,

و لحافِ

knitting

«تارِ نخی»

“cotton warp”

ببافد —

quilts —

شانزده تا از آن‌ها را بافته بود،

she had knitted sixteen of them,

as Avonlea housekeepers were wont to tell in awed voices —

and keeping a sharp eye on the main road that crossed the hollow and wound up the steep red hill beyond.

و چون آوونلی بر شبه‌جزیره‌ای کوچک و مثلثی نشسته بود که در خلیجِ سنت

Since Avonlea occupied a little triangular peninsula jutting out into the Gulf of St.

لارنس پیش رفته بود،

Lawrence,

با آب در دو سویش،

with water on two sides of it,

هر که از آن بیرون می‌رفت یا به آن درمی‌آمد، ناگزیر بود از آن جادهٔ تپه بگذرد و بی‌آنکه بداند از زیرِ تیغِ

anybody who went out of it or into it had to pass over that hill road and so run the unseen gauntlet of Mrs.
