Eessõna

The Preface

Kunstnik on ilusate asjade looja.

The artist is the creator of beautiful things.

Kunsti eesmärk on paljastada kunst ja varjata kunstnikku.

To reveal art and conceal the artist is art’s aim.

The critic is he who can translate into another manner or a new material his impression of beautiful things.

The highest as the lowest form of criticism is a mode of autobiography.

Need, kes leiavad ilusates asjades inetuid tähendusi, on rikutud, olemata võluvad.

Those who find ugly meanings in beautiful things are corrupt without being charming.

See on viga.

This is a fault.

Need, kes leiavad ilusates asjades ilusaid tähendusi, on haritud.

Those who find beautiful meanings in beautiful things are the cultivated.

Nende jaoks on lootust.

For these there is hope.

Nemad on valitud, kellele ilusad asjad tähendavad üksnes ilu.

They are the elect to whom beautiful things mean only beauty.

Pole olemas moraalset ega ebamoraalset raamatut.

There is no such thing as a moral or an immoral book.

Raamatud on hästi kirjutatud

Books are well written,

või halvasti kirjutatud.

or badly written.

Muud pole midagi.

That is all.

The nineteenth century dislike of realism is the rage of Caliban seeing his own face in a glass.

The nineteenth century dislike of romanticism is the rage of Caliban not seeing his own face in a glass.

Inimese moraalne elu moodustab osa kunstniku ainesest,

The moral life of man forms part of the subject-matter of the artist,

kuid kunsti moraalsus seisneb ebatäiusliku vahendi täiuslikus kasutamises.

but the morality of art consists in the perfect use of an imperfect medium.

Ükski kunstnik ei soovi midagi tõestada.

No artist desires to prove anything.

Isegi tõeseid asju on võimalik tõestada.

Even things that are true can be proved.

Ükski kunstnik ei tunne eetilisi kaastundeid.

No artist has ethical sympathies.

Eetiline kaastunne kunstnikus on andestamatu stiilimaneerlikkus.

An ethical sympathy in an artist is an unpardonable mannerism of style.

Ükski kunstnik pole kunagi haiglane.

No artist is ever morbid.

Kunstnik võib väljendada kõike.

The artist can express everything.

Mõte ja keel on kunstnikule kunsti tööriistad.

Thought and language are to the artist instruments of an art.

Pahe ja voorus on kunstnikule kunsti materjalid.

Vice and virtue are to the artist materials for an art.

Vormi seisukohalt

From the point of view of form,

on kõigi kunstide eeskuju muusiku kunst.

the type of all the arts is the art of the musician.

Tunde seisukohalt

From the point of view of feeling,

on eeskujuks näitleja oskus.

the actor’s craft is the type.

Kogu kunst on korraga pind ja sümbol.

All art is at once surface and symbol.

Those who go beneath the surface do so at their peril.

Those who read the symbol do so at their peril.

Kunst peegeldab tõeliselt vaatajat,

It is the spectator,

mitte elu.

and not life, that art really mirrors.

Arvamuste erinevus kunstiteose kohta näitab, et teos on uus,

Diversity of opinion about a work of art shows that the work is new,

keerukas

complex,

ja elav.

and vital.

Kui kriitikud on eri meelt,

When critics disagree,

on kunstnik iseendaga kooskõlas.

the artist is in accord with himself.

We can forgive a man for making a useful thing as long as he does not admire it.

The only excuse for making a useless thing is that one admires it intensely.
