愛麗絲和姊姊並肩坐在河岸上，開始覺得十分厭煩了，

Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the bank,

and of having nothing to do:

她曾一兩次探頭去看姊姊正讀的書，

once or twice she had peeped into the book her sister was reading,

but it had no pictures or conversations in it,

這時忽然有一隻長著粉紅眼睛的白兔從她身旁跑過。

when suddenly a White Rabbit with pink eyes ran close by her.

remarkable in that;

愛麗絲聽見那隻兔子自言自語地說

nor did Alice think it so very much out of the way to hear the Rabbit say to itself,

「哎呀！

“Oh dear!

哎呀！

Oh dear!

我要遲到了！」也不覺得有多麼

I shall be late!”

稀奇（事後她回想起來，才想到自己當時本該覺得納悶才對，

(when she thought it over afterwards, it occurred to her that she ought to have wondered at this,

然而當那兔子真的

but when the Rabbit actually

從背心口袋裡掏出一只錶來，

took a watch out of its waistcoat-pocket,

看了一眼，

and looked at it,

又匆匆忙忙往前趕，

and then hurried on,

愛麗絲便一下子跳了起來，

Alice started to her feet,

因為她心裡忽然閃過一個念頭：她從來沒見過哪隻兔子有背心口袋，

for it flashed across her mind that she had never before seen a rabbit with either a waistcoat-pocket,

更沒見過哪隻兔子能從口袋裡掏出錶來；

or a watch to take out of it,

於是她滿心好奇，

and burning with curiosity,

穿過田野追了上去，

she ran across the field after it,

幸好來得正是時候，剛好看見牠鑽進了樹籬下面一個大大的兔子洞。

and fortunately was just in time to see it pop down a large rabbit-hole under the hedge.
